🦌 𝗛𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗿𝘆: 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱

Texas leads the nation with over 4 million white-tailed deer, and hunters now have a unique way to contribute to their communities through the Hunters for the Hungry program. This initiative, managed by Feeding Texas in collaboration with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, channels donated venison through local food banks to help address food insecurity.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀:
Donations: Hunters can donate legally harvested, field-dressed deer (white-tailed or mule) to participating processors. Species like Axis and Blackbuck are also accepted. Processing: Meat processors collaborate with food banks to distribute the lean, nutritious venison. Impact: In the 2022-23 season, over 87,000 pounds of venison were donated, providing more than 10 million servings since the program's inception.

𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:
Houston-area food banks like the Montgomery County Food Bank work with processors such as Fleming’s Wild Game Processing in Montgomery and Point Blank to manage the program locally. Other processors include Bay Area Deer Processing in Pasadena and Juniors Smokehouse in Highlands, among others. While the program accepts deer, other game like hogs is excluded.

𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗲𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗻:
Even non-hunters can contribute by donating funds directly to the program through Feeding Texas or while purchasing a hunting license.

This initiative offers a way for hunters to make a tangible impact by sharing their harvest with families in need, turning the hunting season into a season of giving.
